My AP Photos Concentration + Statement
The central idea of my concentration was to showcase the exploration of my Hispanic heritage through food. When I was younger, cooking with my grandma helped me understand who I am, as a person. I have been able to dive into the finer parts of my identity and explore my family’s culture, through learning how to make traditional foods. In my images, I wanted to show my journey with my heritage.
Starting with the image of the whisk (image 1), this was intended to show the start of my journey, the lack of product on par with my lacking knowledge. The images 2 and 3, show little color to showcase the disconnect between me and what I’m making, as I want to learn more about Hispanic traditions. For image 4, handwritten recipes I had found in my basement were displayed on a wooden recipe box and used to represent my discovery of my culture and identity. As my grandparents teach me more about my heritage, I feel increasingly connected to my family and culture, displayed in the increasing warmth of the photos, demonstrated in images 5 and 6. Continuing my journey, I learn more about traditional flavors, colors, and clothing. In images 7 through 10, I increased the used of traditional textures, such as wood and wicker, to highlight my slowly increasing understanding of my heritage. In images 11 and 12, there is more color and warmth in the photos, as I incorporate objects passed down to me, such as my mother’s folklorico skirt seen in image 10, and the handpainted platter in image 11. In my culture, food is a way to bring people together and create memories, photographs are used to capture them.
